2009 TV Preview: 'Demons'

Over the next few weeks Tube Talk will be coming over all soothsayer-like, looking ahead at the biggest new and returning TV series coming up in 2009. Today we begin with ITV's freshest stab at the cult genre, Demons...

Fantasy drama Demons is a new spin on the classic tale of Dracula, set in modern day London.

The story begins when teenager Luke Rutherford (Christian Cooke) is greeted by the sudden arrival of Rupert Galvin (Philip Glenister), his brash American godfather.

Galvin isn't visiting for pleasantries, however. He's come with some shocking news for Luke: the dark forces of the world are gathering and now it's his duty, as the last descendant of the Van Helsing line, to smite them.

Luke barely has time to take in the revelation before being catapulted into an intense course of training. Helping Galvin with this task is the beautiful but icy cold Mina Harker (Zoe Tapper), a blind concert pianist who is regarded as the primary authority on the so-called "half-lives" (vampires, demons, zombies, werewolves, et al).

Completing the foursome is Ruby (Zoe Holliday), Luke's feisty best friend who is very keen to get in on the smiting action.

The sinister zombie priest Father Simeon (Richard Wilson) is also on hand as a source of information on the lore and myth behind the creatures Luke comes across.

Luke's first adversary is Gladiolas Thrip (guest star Mackenzie Crook), one of the most dangerous vampires of the underworld.

A bounty hunter with a twisted sense of humour, Thrip has a burning hatred for the Van Helsings and is determined to see the last of their number dead.

Other half-lives Luke will do battle with include the "Noisy Boys", a group of hooded hyenas that roam the streets of London; "Redlip", a monkey-like creature that hides in the shadows stalking his human victims; "Mr Tibbs", a half-man, half-rat who experiments on humans in an underground lab; and "Gilgamel", an ancient demon who feasts on the souls of children.

Meanwhile, Luke will finally learn what really happened when his father died mysteriously on a "business trip" abroad 15 years earlier.

Demons airs over six episodes on ITV1 from the new year.
